Coming Together is Inevitable

I often think of patterns that hold true over time. In fact, the very strength of a truth can be measured by how long its pattern lasts. There is one pattern that is an arc that runs through the entire lifespan of Creation. Consciousness in all its forms will always merge and create more complex consciousness.

Consciousness is an information system that has an inclination to persist over time. Everything from particles to living organisms are systems that process information and are inclined to persist and become more complex through time.

Particles became atoms, which became molecules, which became enzymes, which became proteins. Each one of these monumental leaps in the physical realm actually represents an upgrade in the vehicle that carries the consciousness. Each leap represents an exponential increase in the depth and speed of the information it processes.

A gigantic leap happened after proteins became complex enough to spiral into double helixes to form one of the most efficient and long lasting information storage systems ever created. Long lasting because after countless generations of DNA that eventually die off, but the information it carries finds a way to persist and evolve over vast stretches of time... welcome to LIFE.

Biology spans the spectrum of single cell organisms that are sovereign to some degree from other cells. There are sovereign cells that have achieved symbiosis with other organisms as in the case of cells that integrated mitochondria. There are also single cell organisms that have sacrificed a much greater degree of their sovereignty to become multicellular organisms, forming a consciousness exponentially more advanced.

These multicellular information systems persist over time as plants and animals of wonderful complexity. And there are animals that have the ability to think in abstractions, as far as we know these are Homo Sapiens. Our abstractions demand language to be communicated to others. Biology creates an entity that can go beyond DNA and invent its own systems that preserve information from generation to generation... think...Oral Histories, Books, Art, Computers.

Think of the compendiums of human knowledge that have accumulated over years... libraries, museums, the Internet. I believe these are mere physical representations of the collective consciousness to which we all share and contribute. Piere de Chardin coined the term noosphere to describe this conscious repository of human wisdom.

We are currently all connected via the Internet with each device acting as a neuron in a vast neural network that resembles our brain. Given the trend, Isn’t it logical to conclude that the consciousness of individual humans are coming together to form a far more vast consciousness that reflects the collective mind of man?

Ray Kurzweil foretells a time where technology advances to a point that it renders our current way of thinking useless. I believe this singularity is the awakening of a very palpable collective consciousness. This collective connection has always been there in the spiritual and quantum realm. It is merely manifesting itself on a macro level via man’s ingenuity.

This sense of collective consciousness will feel as real as our individual consciousness. In fact, everyone would painfully miss the collective consciousness if we were to lose the Internet for a week.

The other shoe drops

So how will the psychopath approach this new collective mind? I believe they will do what they do best... seek a position of power to wield influence. That means that communication technologies will be promoted that centralize and control the traffic of information in our global brain. However, the level of connection that we will share will make it very difficult to control our exchange of information. The level of surveillance by the elite will become more powerful and invasive than we could even fathom now. Yet our deep level of connection will render us essentially transparent to each other. This transparency makes the act of surveillance moot. In fact, I envision free minds coming together in pods of complete transparency... sharing everything in what resembles a peer to peer network on steroids. This free sharing of minds will solve problems that were not even approachable to hierarchies that maintain power by dividing and isolating the minds of its subjects.

The collective mind will persist and evolve because it is an immutable trend in the universe. What we should concern ourselves with should be the health of this collective mind. Will we experience the same pathologies that plague the individual mind... depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia? Where does the Collective mind go for therapy?
